This project was definitely the most unique so far in my career.
Marketed as a VR game, the game itself was a UE4 based, projection mapped interactive music game/attraction at Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki with the backing of numerous big name Japanese dance music acts.
The interaction system utilized modified Oculus hand controllers, which were not only tracked for had motions but also the spatial position of each user and orientation towards the 4 walls of the attraction room allowing the players to move around the room to chase their own "rhythm markers" to interact with the game.
Having up to 4 users simultaneously required a lot of design thought regarding ease of play and most importantly, user safety.
A lot of these issues were solved before the 1st test location was built thanks to VR simulation.
After initial 2D concept and environment mockups, the game and play environment was initially planned in VR, this allowed us to rapidly iterate the room size and test human eye field-of-view and reaction time tests before commiting to building the testing room for the real thing.
In our VR space, 360 degree environment movies with camera motions were mocked up as rendered video textures, then "projected" onto the virtual room walls and tested by myself in order to reduce any feelings of motion sickness or unsteadyness within the user interaction space. |
After the test room was built in a Tokyo warehouse, many hours were spent within the testing facility working on visibility, wall surfaces, lighting and UI size for ease of use and safety measures.
The attraction was a success, and is now in its second iteration as a Space Invaders themed version and has been on tour in numerous cities around the country.
Not only was I solely and directly in charge of the visual and UI experience, I also contributed to the story and design of the game.
